Why Does Jen Not Heart Martha Stewart?

Monday, March 30th, 2009

DomestiGal Sue,

I bet you’re wondering where I’ve been the past week. Well, it hasn’t been pretty. Finals got the better of me and I have emerged puffy, bloated, and broken out. It is not my finest hour, Sue. But starting today - TODAY, I tell you! - I am in offical detox and fabulosify mode.

Which is why I do not appreciate posts like your most recent one. Granted, I have been MIA so what right do I have to scold you for posting about carbtastic wedding cakes? Whatev. You know you love me.

For the record, I think the initial attempt at your wedding cake by your sister is A to the Dorable. And really? Can we clone her and give one of her to every bride-to-be out there? Because dude, if I had a sister who was willing to both sew my wedding dress AND bake my cake, I’d be one blissful bride.

The cake does need a little work, but I do applaud the use of buttercream frosting instead of fondant. I am really not understanding the increasing popularity of fondant-frosted wedding cakes. Is this Martha Stewart’s influence, I wonder? The more wedding magazines I buy the more anti-Martha I become, which may come as a shock considering I am the Domestic Goddess. But I simply do not appreciate the pressure she puts on us brides to have every detail of the wedding look totally perfect.

Martha, it's nothing personal.

Not that I want my cake looking like the sad, sloppy brownies that I baked for my sixth grade bake sale with multi-colored dinosaur sprinkles that my arch nemesis dropped down the stairs which I always suspected was on purpose - but I also do not need my wedding cake looking so - well - inedible.

Check it:

This is a wedding cake with fondant frosting.

Is it just me or does that just not look particularly yummy?

As opposed to this:

See now, the frosting is still smooth but you can tell that it’s creamier - and thus yummier - than that tasteless fondant.

I wish I actually knew who baked that cake with the buttercream swirlies, because that is what I want on my wedding cake! What do you think, Sue?

Thank goodness I’m back, because this cake issue is a big one and there is lots to discuss. Don’t even get me started on cupcake wedding cakes…

More soon! It’s good to be back!

Wedding Update from DomestiGal Jen

Tuesday, March 17th, 2009

Hello Sue!

Apologies for being MIA recently… that’s Miserable In Assessments. Seriously. I have had two group projects, two exams, and three papers to write! Insanity! And SO not fabulous!

What IS fabulous? Your moissanite wedding rings!! I love love LOVE them! Good for you for crossing over to the bling side, baby! I have now worn the Ring of Dreams for over a month and have yet to see a piece of jewelry that compares. Not that I’m biased. Not to mention the fact that I will totally have kicked ass on my exams because I doubtless blinded everyone else in the room. Gotta love the engagement ring as competitive advantage!

I am also slightly obsessing over the fact that you are getting married on Buddha Day. You will have the greatest Feng Shui Wedding of all time! I am rather devastated that I will not be able to be there, as we will have just returned from our Wedding Planning Whirlwind. We have thus far made five appointments in as many days. Full itinerary to come, Sue, as I know that Sue of the Non-Wedding Feng Shui Fest will want to live vicariously through Jen of the Wedding of Dreams.

In other wedding-related news (like there’s any other news that matters), we received our Save-the-Dates! Keep your eyes on your box - your MAILbox, Sue! - because we’ll be sending them soon. They are super cute. A tri-fold card with a detachable calendar with our date circled on it. Simple and different and fun and lovely. And orange! Yes! I used an orange color for the font! After all, if I can’t actually have an orange wedding dress, I might as well make as much of the rest of the wedding orange, right? Right.

More news to come. You know you want it.

The Bridal Shoe Review: Cole Haan

Friday, February 13th, 2009

Yes! It’s about time! I am delighted to announce to blushing DomestiBrides everywhere that Cole Haan has unveiled - so to speak - a new bridal collection! And what’s more, they have used their Nike Air technology in every shoe.

Now you will really feel like you’re on cloud nine on your wedding day!

And they’re super-cute. And most of them are dyeable, so bridesmaids can wear them too! I mean could this be any more genius?

Here are my faves:

Ceci Air Rose Sling

Ceci Air Rose Sling

Floral details are a major trend right now. Flower power is everywhere, from wedding gowns to bridal hair clips. I love love love the little roses on these shoes. They won’t match my dress, but if they did I would snatch them up in a split second!

Ceci Air Rose Ballet

Ceci Air Rose Ballet

If you are going to flats on your big day (and you go, girl! Who needs heels anyway?), you and these cutie patooties may be MFEO. Again, the roses. A to the Dorable.

Ceci Air Mid Sandal

Ceci Air Mid Sandal

These are the ideal strappy sandal for the well-pedicured bride. I love the double sling-back. Adds a hint of glam to these babies. So cute!

And finally, my blinged-out favorite of them all:

Ceci Air Rouched Sandal

Ceci Air Rouched Sandal

I love. These shoes. It wasn’t until I went wedding dress shopping that I truly understood the ingeniously elegant and fabulously flattering folding of fabric that is rouching. I heart rouching. I wish everything were rouched. And now I have found shoes with rouching! And bling! Divine!

Gals, let me know your thoughts! I have yet to find my Wedding Shoes of Dreams, so would love any input!

Sue’s Dirty Secret: DomestiGal Jen Responds

Friday, February 6th, 2009

Um. Am I dead? No seriously. Have I died and gone to WEDDING HEAVEN???

Sue! This is brilliant! You are getting married! You are getting married to The Doctor! You are getting married before me!

Um. Ok well that last part is not my fave. I mean obv my wedding will far outshine yours - not that this is Bride Wars - but. Well. Nevermind. I’m over it.

I just pray I will actually have my engagement ring before you get your wedding ring.

But back to you. So! A red wedding dress, eh? Why am I not surprised? You may be surprised to hear that I applaud this choice, my dear. Remember that divine orange wedding dress I found back in the fall? I think a wedding dress of color can be simply fab, and obv you will pull it off (literally, I’m sure, and figuratively).

What concerns me is the hoochie example you showed. I think you need something a little more bridal:

Or how about this:

You’ve got a hot bod that is just begging for a mermaid gown!

Ok. I kid, I kid. I’m sure your sister will put together an A to the Mazing red wedding dress that will look smashing on you!

Actually, I think I’m still in shock. I think I need to go read some bridal mags to calm and recenter myself.

Domestic Partner has a Dirty Secret

Thursday, February 5th, 2009

DomestiGals,

So, I have a secret.  It’s a bit of a dirty very-unDomesticPartner-sort-of-secret.

The Doctor and I have decided to go from being Domestic Partners to Partners in Wedded Bliss.

That’s right – we’re getting married!

But, before everyone goes and flips off their wedding veils and starts planning a DGals online bachelorette party, I have to admit a few things:

1.  There will be no white wedding dress.

It will be red and hotter than hot as my youngest sister is designing it!  Here’s a sneak preview!

Sue's Wedding Dress!

Sue

Okay, just kidding.  It won’t be *quite* so slutty.  (Just a little slutty — don’t tell my lil’ Asian mama!)

2.  There will be no church wedding.

We’re getting married in this community garden in the East Village of Manhattan.  (Please no comments about Miranda from Sex and the City getting married in a garden.  People, her wedding was in the West Village and mine will be in the East Village.  Tres, tres different!)

Here’s one photo of it!

3.  There will be no diamonds.

Don’t faint, DomestiGal Jen  I’ll still be excited for you once you receive your diamond engagement ring 10 years from now!

PS:  I mean, I’m still completely open to fake diamonds like moissanites.

DomestiGal Sue's Wedding Band of Dreams

DomestiGal Sue's Moissanite!

PPS:  Is it bad if I only want to get married so I can have my fake diamond???  I mean, of course not, right?

Anyway, DomestiGals.  Of course there is no other group of gals I’d rather be celebrating with!  I’ll keep you ladies updated with events as they progress!

xx,

Anne Hathaway: Delightful DomestiBride

Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009

Hello, Sue and lovely ladies in the Blogosphere!

As I tweeted, on Sunday The (amazing, patient, adorable, loving) Lawyer took me to see this:

I know, I know. I am like totally behind the times. But ladies, bear with me! Between splitting our lives between London and Uni (that’s Brit slang for “university,” y’all) and the delays in movies being released across the pond, The Lawyer and I are way behind on our film intake.

So this fabulous and adorable flick may be old news to you, but can we please have a moment for the delightful (and Oscar-nominated!) Anne Hathaway?

I just love her. How can a DomestiGal not love a Hollywood actress who has successfully navigated the transition from teen queen to HWood A-Lister to dating and dumping that douchebag to Oscar-nominated superstar and fashion icon and general all-around wellspring of fabulousness?

Pardon the run-on. Sigh.

Anyway, she acted the pants off Kate Hudson in Bride Wars - a movie which made me cry multiple times and which I am dying to see again as soon as possible. I need a closer look at Anne’s cute brown tote and Kate’s A to the Mazing Tiffany Novo.

Sue, will you not consider this for your Domestic Partnership engagement non-wedding Ring of Dreams, or however you are referring to it these days?

Anyway, since I know Sue will not be seeing this movie (and probably does not know much about the divine Ms. Hathaway) I would love to hear the thoughts of our Gals in the blogosphere on all things Bride Wars - from the Vera Wang wedding dress to the wedding planning to the bling.

Toned Arms Over the Internet?

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

Sue darling,

Thank you for spoiling the surprise for The Lawyer regarding the neckline of my dress. Thanks A LOT.

(Actually, in truth, I had already let the neckline slip - so to speak. So you’re in the clear. But watch it, lady!)

So yes, as you expected, I have commenced working out my arms, shoulders, and upper back like a mad woman in preparation for the Wedding of Dreams. In fact, I have decided that instead of aiming for the limbs of Jennifer Aniston or Angelina Jolie (are you really still hooked on that scandal? Get over it! Team Brangelina 4evah!), my model for toned arms - as well as general total hotness - is our very own First Foxy Lady, Michelle Obama. Seriously. Did you SEE her upper body in that A to the Mazing Jason Wu gown? Gorge.

Anyway. So with Michelle as my guiding light and Colossus on my ass, I am doing push-ups, pull-downs, rows, dips, curls, and extensions until I drop.

Whenever I am in need of extra motivation, as we all are on occasion, I turn to the glorious Internet. Where do I go? You know you want to know. Check ‘em:

Just Eat Smart - OMG! Did you see that Sherika answered my question personally? As Rachel Zoe says, I die. Not that I watched her reality show. Nope. Definitely did not.

Ultimate Performance - This Colossal site (hint hint) has superb info on any fitness topic you can imagine!

Fit-Bottomed Girls - The FBGs are a long-standing fave of ours. They are always on to something fabulous, and their passion for fitness is always inspiring.

There are so many fitness-related sites out there, but these are my faves.

Must dash - off to the gym! Look at how motivated I am!

The First Wedding Dance: To Curve or Not To Curve?

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009

Dearest Sue,

Yesterday The Lawyer and I got an email from our wedding DJ - yes, because as we have mentioned I have basically planned my whole wedding even though the Ring of Dreams has yet to make an appearance. Whatev. We’re over it.

But anyway this email got me thinking. And my thinking has turned into a MAYJAH wedding planning crisis!

To curve or not to curve?

Let me explain.

There are all these couples these days doing “curveball” first dances at their wedding. Like, instead of dancing to “Unchained Melody” (what a snoozer!) for five minutes, you do so for a minute and a half, then the crowd hears a record scratch, the bride and groom look all confused (I mean I can totally utilize my dramatic skillz here), and then “Bust a Move” or “Ice Ice Baby” starts playing and before you know it, the couple is poppin’ and lockin’ in a fully choreographed hip-hop routine that brings down the house.

Cute, right? (Or did you just throw up a little in your mouth?)

Check out this geniosity:

Other couples are choosing iconographic choreography. “Dirty Dancing.” “Napoleon Dynamite.” Etc.

So, do Mike and I go for the curve, or just stick to something traditional? I can’t decide! Are there too many people doing curveball dances now? Is it too cheesy? Will my total and complete lack of dancing skills make for a big ol’ hot mess on the dance floor if I attempt anything other than a simple slow dance? Then again, I do have a year to learn how to bust a move…

Ladies in the ’sphere! Did any of you have curveball wedding dances?

Help! Thoughts???

xoxo,

DomestiGal Jen
