Wednesday Wedding Gown Gush and Gush and Gush

Wednesday, April 8th, 2009

Ladies,

Rejoice! It’s Wedding Gown Wednesday!

Today is all about simplicity. Lela Rose’s debut wedding gown collection is divine, elegant, perfect. I love. Do you?

Perhaps this gown is deceptively simple. An easy silhouette, but the criss-crossing fabric of the bodice is actually quite complex. And gorgeous. And flattering to boot!

Here’s another goodie:

I grow ever more fond of lace as all this wedding-obsessing goes on. Again, a simple shape here - too curve-hugging for me, thanks, but I do appreciate it! - but the lace adds a layer of complexity. Not to mention romance!

Finally, a third and more daring number:

Lela again. She seriously rocks.

Lela again. She seriously rocks.

The boobie bow is not for everyone. I certainly could not pull off this look. But I covet. I heart. I think it’s different and modern yet enduring and timeless.

Exactly what a bride should be.

Sesame Street is in mourning this season:

Ok no but for real Monique. Why. Do. You. Do. This. To. Me. Unless it’s so that I lust after your other dresses less, in which case The Lawyer’s bank account says, “Merci beaucoup!”

She can still pull it out though:

Ok so these veils she showed this season were weird, but ignoring those - I love the asymmetrical layer here, and the interesting texture of the dress. Very luxe, very noughties. Yes, that’s noughties, as in this decade, not naughties. Thank you.

But back to the first creation - seriously? Would anybody ever actually wear that in real life? Down the aisle? It’s one thing to be fashion-forward, but this is not even flattering! It’s fugtastic! Right? Or am I just missing the bird - uh, boat - here?

Wednesday Wedding Gown Gush and Posh

Wednesday, March 11th, 2009

So for those of you who were not as obsessed with New York Fashion Week as I was, I will have you know that Victoria “Posh Spice” Beckham showed a collection. It was not ground-breaking, but it was far from fugly! In fact, two of her numbers would work perfectly for a courthouse wedding. Check ‘em:

I mean, right? Not ugly! Kind of lovely! I like this one even more:

Give that gal a chic birdcage veil and a few calla lilies and she is good to get hitched!

Nice work, Posh. Now please go and eat a Krispy Kreme.

Jen’s New Orange Wedding Dress

Friday, March 6th, 2009

Hello Sue,

Ok, so obv I am not going to actually buy it, people. But look what I found!

Fab orange gown that could totally be a wedding dress by Carmen Marc Valvo

Fab orange gown that could totally be a wedding dress by Carmen Marc Valvo

Sigh. Orange perfection.

Now, I heart Carmen Marc Valvo for a number of reasons - not the least of which is that he makes very gorgeous dresses, one of which I will be wearing for my rehearsal dinner! Yes! Yes! I will! It’s a lovely dark green cocktail number with a deep V-neck (HOT) and a black beaded belt (double HOT). I have lusted after Carmen Marc Valvo’s designs for a number of years and was thrilled to find one I could actually afford. Unlike the Orange Wedding Dress of Dreams pictured above. Sigh.

Another reason I heard Carmen Marc? He is a colon cancer survivor. Pretty amazing, right? And he does lots of work to help spread awareness about the disease.

Speaking of which, March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month, DomestiGals! The Colon Cancer Alliance has more info about this very treatable and beatable disease - take a moment to check it out and help spread awareness!

After all, butts are just as hot as boobs - isn’t it time we started talking about them?

Wednesday Wedding Gown Gawk and Squawk

Ah ladies, I’m sure you missed my wedding gown gushing last week! Well, I am back. And feeling… feathered.

Thoughts on this one? It actually reminds me of Nicole Kidman’s Oscar gown. A little too bird-like for me personally, but I do appreciate the movement of the dress.

Or what about faux-feathered?

There is a LOT going on here. But I kind of love it. But I would never wear it. But that doesn’t mean it’s not fabulous. Or is it not?

Clearly I am torn. Thoughts, ladies? Give this chick some clarity!

Oscar Mania Continues… with Wedding Gowns

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

Sue and fabulous DomestiGals,

As promised, I am still obsessing about the Oscars. I mean, perhaps I’d be able to let it go if, like, half the women weren’t wearing white gowns that could totally - TOTALLY! - double as wedding dresses. If I were a tailor I’d take some of these designs and knock off some wedding gowns STAT.

Of course, since my own wedding gown is the equivalent of the fake Gucci bag you buy out of some guy’s trash bag in Times Square, I have an affinity for knock-off designer wedding gowns. But even if I weren’t biased, some of the dresses from Sunday night’s Oscars are just too bridal to resist!

So, who will take home the DomestiOscar for Best Pseudo-Wedding Dress? The Nominees are…

Penelope Cruz - Who accepted her Best Supporting Actress Oscar in a stunning white vintage Balmain with drapes, lace, and bling.

Marisa Tomei - Marisa is sooo making a comeback. She looked killer in a one-shoulder, mermaid-cut white-gray Versace with gorgeous geometric folds.

Sarah Jessica Parker - I will always be a huge fan of SJP. She takes such a wonderful fashion risks and always dresses appropriately. Her Oscar gown was no exception. The Dior Haute Couture creation would make a GORGE wedding gown, with its fitted blinged-out, sweetheart bodice and tulle princess skirt.

Jessica Biel - Should she ever get Justin Timberlake to settle down, her Oscar gown would be the perfect wedding dress! The modern ivory satin Prada number shows off Jessica’s hot athletic bod while indulging in luxurious fabric folds.

Evan Rachel Wood - SO not one of my favorite actresses, but you can’t argue that her ivory Elie Saab gown would look incredibly glamorous walking down the aisle. The V cut in the strapless bodice is a little sexy, and the folds of the gown are just beautifully crafted.

So ladies? Who will it be? Leave your votes in our comments section!

Red Wedding Dress

Monday, February 16th, 2009

DomestiGals,

I know I’m supposed to be doing a twice-monthly NYTimes Wedding Review, but, for now, I’d rather talk about how hot I’m going to look in my red wedding dress.

My youngest sister is designing my sexy, certainly-not-flashy, dress, and I can’t wait!

Which is your absolute favorite?

Sexy and Subtle Sue

Sexy and Subtle Sue

Or, perhaps something more South Asian:

Sue as a South Asian

Sue as a South Asian

Mmmm… or would you prefer to see Sue as fab-u-lous celebrity Elizabeth Hurley?

Sue and Liz Hurley = Fab

Sue and Liz Hurley = Fab

The only problem with this, is that my bouncy B cup would have to double between now and May 9, 2009.

Which brings us to the last option, a la Bjork:

Sue dressed in Toilet Paper!

Sue dressed in Toilet Paper!

Well DomestiGals?

To be honest, of course I don’t really care what my red dress ultimately looks like.  In fact, my sweet sister called me the other day to discuss my dress, and I had nothing to say.  I just want a dress that I can wear again, after our wedding in the East Village.

What about the rest of you?  Have any of you been able to tear apart your wedding dress and re-use the materials for a handbag, a scarf, or, if your dress was uber-heinous… a shower curtain?

Do tell!

xx,

Sue

Wednesday Wedding Gown Gawk and Gush

Wednesday, February 11th, 2009

Another Hump Day, another fit of procrastination, another excuse to gush over fabulous wedding gowns and gawk at, well, the not-so-fab.

This week, we examine an increasingly popular trend: short wedding dresses.

Like this little number:

This and all images via NYMag.com. Claire Pettibone Spring 2009

I actually think this is a very sweet dress. But is it me or is this better suited to a wedding after-party, or, for that matter, a beach picnic, than an actual wedding ceremony? It’s a lovely dress though. Which is more than I can say for this:

Elizabeth Fillmore Bridal Spring 2009

Elizabeth Fillmore Bridal Spring 2009

Oh honey no. I know I’ve been tough on Elizabeth Fillmore these past two weeks. But no. Too short, too tight, too tailed. The veil goes on your head, not your ass.

I am not totally against short dresses though. I think short done right can actually be quite chic and appropriate, especially for a vintage-y wedding. For example, this I heart:

Monique Lhuillier Bridal Spring 2009

Monique Lhuillier Bridal Spring 2009

Now this is how it’s done. Ah, Monique. You are a star.

I mean I basically love everything about this dress. I’m a little more classic myself - no vintage wedding for me, though I do love looking at pics of them - but I love the fabrics, I love the beading, I love the cut, I adore the bow. Short and sweet.

That’s it for now, ladies! More next week… which also happens to be Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week. May the fashion fantasies begin…

Sue’s Dirty Secret: DomestiGal Jen Responds

Friday, February 6th, 2009

Um. Am I dead? No seriously. Have I died and gone to WEDDING HEAVEN???

Sue! This is brilliant! You are getting married! You are getting married to The Doctor! You are getting married before me!

Um. Ok well that last part is not my fave. I mean obv my wedding will far outshine yours - not that this is Bride Wars - but. Well. Nevermind. I’m over it.

I just pray I will actually have my engagement ring before you get your wedding ring.

But back to you. So! A red wedding dress, eh? Why am I not surprised? You may be surprised to hear that I applaud this choice, my dear. Remember that divine orange wedding dress I found back in the fall? I think a wedding dress of color can be simply fab, and obv you will pull it off (literally, I’m sure, and figuratively).

What concerns me is the hoochie example you showed. I think you need something a little more bridal:

Or how about this:

You’ve got a hot bod that is just begging for a mermaid gown!

Ok. I kid, I kid. I’m sure your sister will put together an A to the Mazing red wedding dress that will look smashing on you!

Actually, I think I’m still in shock. I think I need to go read some bridal mags to calm and recenter myself.

Wednesday Wedding Dress Dish ‘n Diss

Wednesday, February 4th, 2009

Hey Gals,

So just because I bought my wedding dress doesn’t mean I’m not still dress-drooling and gown-gushing. There are some fabulous - and not so fabulous - designs out there for Spring 2009 and I cannot resist the temptation to share my thoughts on some stand-outs with you all. So start getting excited for Hump Day ladies, it will be a vertiable Dress Fest here in DomestiGal Land!

We’ll kick off with a classic. Every girl’s fantasy (including the Bride Wars gals!): a Vera Wang wedding gown. Fresh off the runway, feast your eyes upon this gorgeousness!

This and all photos via NYMag.com; Vera Wang Bridal Spring 2009

Granted, the headgear would not be my first choice, but this dress is Vera at her best. I love the bust-bling, and I think the middle split of the gown is elegant and princess-like without being over the top.

Or kinda slutty:

Elizabeth Fillmore Spring 2009

I mean, right? Your wedding day is NOT the day for a front-and-center, thigh-high split. Unless there is a gorge layer of duchesse satin beneath it.

Sigh. I wish every day were Wednesday.

Share your thoughts in the comments, ladies!

xoxo,

DomestiGal Jen
